No matter if your website is an informational one or if it’s an online store to sell your products, you want people to come and visit it. Without visitors your information remains unknown and your products remain unsold. A great deal of the web traffic you get is driven by the three major search engines: Google, Yahoo and MSN, so it’s obvious that it is desired to have your website coming up in the search engine results pages (SERP). SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization is a collection of techniques and practices that will make your website show up in the first page(s) of organic SERP.

Now that you know what SEO is and why is needed, to better understand SEO you need to have an idea about how the search engines work. A search engine is a huge database of indexed web pages that users can query and get relevant results. So, a search engine needs to:

1. Crawl and Index Web Sites. Through automated scripts called robots or spiders, the search engines crawl through the Internet finding websites and web pages by following links and jumping from page to page and from website to website. Once a web page is crawled, its content is indexed into the search engine’s huge database.

2. Return Ranked Results. When a search query is made, the search engine’s algorithm finds out the pages in the database related to that query and returns the results sorted from the most relevant to the least.

Seeing how the search engines work, it is clear now that SEO will focus on the terms and phrases that users type into the search box and how to make your web pages relevant for those terms and phrases. But, because the Internet has become such a commercial place, the search engines have learned that they cannot rely only on websites to be honest about their web pages content. That’s why SEO needs to focus also on another factor used in ranking search results: popularity. Your web site is popular if others link to it. The more important the website that links to your website is, the “stronger” the link. A well-known system for ranking web pages is Google’s PageRank algorithm:

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.” Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages’ relative importance.”

So, to summarize, SEO is about building relevant web pages (Internal SEO) and making them popular (External SEO).

Early in an Internet marketing person’s career, they usually learn the value of using Google AdSense. You know the ads that seem to blend into the page, as if they’re part of the design? Those are AdSense ads, and if you make them part of your website or blog, when someone clicks on an ad, you’ll be paid.

You could earn tons of cash in some niches. Advertisers using the keyword “dog,” for example, pay $12 thousand to more than $22 thousand per day for their clicks. If you’re in the dog niche, you may do very well with Google’s ad system.

But Internet marketing is full of niches, and you may not be in a niche that’s as popular. Then what can you do?

These 5 Ways will help you to pick up your AdSense earning, no matter what Internet marketing niche you’re in:

1. Be sure to use the colors in your website or blog when designing your ads. For example, if your website is primarily white, you want ads with white backgrounds and white borders. That way, the ads will blend right into the page and appear to be content. People tend to click on these ads more often, which means more money for you.

2. Get the ads on top of your pages, don’t hide them way down at the bottom of the page. If people can’t see them, how can they click? Everything that’s important in your Internet marketing website or blog should be “above the fold.”

3. Install a Google search box. Then, when someone searches from your site, ads that apply to the keywords the person searched for will appear on the search results pages. When someone clicks, you’re paid.

4. Refer other Internet marketing webmasters to AdSense. Get referral commissions.

5. Combine AdSense and You Tube. Get video content for your site, which is shown alongside appropriate ads. Clickers bring you more cash.

All 5 of these are great ways to get more income for your Internet marketing business. Hire someone to install the code for you, if you aren’t a tech person. However, it’s pretty easy and Google’s directions are fairly complete.

If your Internet marketing business isn’t already using AdSense, try it. Before you apply, you’ll need a website or blog to put the ads on. And when approved, be sure to stick to Google’s terms of service. Advertising your page in the wrong way or clicking on your own ads could cause you to lose your account.

Still, monetizing your website or blog with Google AdSense is a wise decision. The minute you get your blog or website going, go over to Google and apply to be accepted into the program. Then, start driving traffic to your site. Your income from AdSense won’t be huge to start, but as your website grows, the income you receive from Google will increase with it.

Web hosting is a seemingly complex topic that small business owners can sometimes feel confounded by. When the techie on a message board offhandedly mentions IP addresses, domain names, and the type of hosting plan your business needs, you might be ready to head for the hills! Don’t be overburdened by the unfamiliar jargon. It’s really very simple.

Before you get any type of web hosting plan, you need to register a domain name. You can create a free account at one of the accredited domain registrars like Directnic, Moniker, or Godaddy.

Next, use their search box to see if the domain you want is already taken by someone else, or is still available. Most generic domain names, i.e., dictionary words and names are already taken. However, just because someone has registered the .com version of a popular name, doesn’t mean that you can’t get the same name without the .com. For instance, you might be able to get laptops.org or laptops.cc. When you run a search for laptops, it will tell you what extensions are available, e.g., .com, .net, .org, .cc, .ws, .name, etc. Each have different technical meanings, but you can use them interchangeably, at least for now. A .com is a company, a .org is an organization, and a .ws represents a website, etc.

Ok, so you’ve had to combine a few words or maybe even create a brand new word to find a good domain, now what? Now, you need a web hosting plan. In order to serve content on the internet, you have to upload that content. However, you have to upload it to someone else’s server. A server is just like a computer, located remotely, that serves other computers in the network. If you’re confused, don’t worry, just hear me out. Each server has a unique IP address, just like your computer you have at home. That’s how computers are identified on the internet. Domain names make it possible to identify computers, or IP addresses, as distinct alphabetical addresses that make sharing and communicating the websites you find easier.

It would be pretty odd to say that you really like 66.249.65.83, but it wouldn’t be so odd to say that you really like Amazon.com The IP address simply corresponds to the domain name. How did that happen you ask? I just got a domain name, and it doesn’t have an IP address you may say. That’s right because only computers have IP addresses. However, your web host will give you a server IP address that you will “point your domain” to. When you buy a web hosting package from a company online, they will give you the IP address you’re to use. Then you will login to your domain registrar, e.g., Moniker or Directnic (where you bought the domain name) and tell the registrar (by inputting some information into a simple form) what the IP address of your web host is. A web host is just a remote computer. After that, you just use a program called CuteFTP or SmartFTP to upload all your files (pictures, html pages, sound recordings, and graphics) to your web host. The FTP programs are very easy to use. However, unless you have pictures and HTML pages and text all put together, then you can’t upload anything.

It’s easy to pay writers to create articles by going to Elance.com, and it’s easy to get cheap design through the same company. It’s just a brokerage firm where you post your project and all the freelance workers bid on it. You might post one project that stated that you needed 5 articles on cabinet construction, etc. Then post another project with a description that said, “I need someone to make a website with a logo and navigation for cabinet-making. I have 5 articles for content, and I can provide the text for the homepage. I will also provide my company contact information.” Then you could go up to the business card store and make 50 cards with your new website name and pass them out to people or pay a business 10% of your sales to have your cabinet-making cards in their storefront. You would simply need to make special cards with a referrer name for the business so you wouldn’t be giving the business 10% of every sale Remember, too, there are different kinds of web hosting you can purchase when you’re starting out, and it’s important to know the differences. It wouldn’t behoove you to waste money on unnecessary server space or a special kind of high-powered server. There are several kinds of web hosting. Free web hosting is always supported by advertisements.

The provider will place graphic advertisements, called banner ads, or text links, called text ads on the content you upload. A shared web hosting service is when your website is on the same server as hundreds, or even thousands of others. Most of the time the server resources, e.g., RAM and the CPU are shared. Virtual dedicated servers is kind of like a simulation of dedicated servers because each users feels like he has his or her own, but they’re actually sharing a server with several others. In a dedicated hosting service, a user gets full control over his or her own server, however, they don’t own the server. The really massive websites use clustered hosting, one step above dedicated hosting. In this case, several servers host the same content of a single website. This produces better resource utilization.

When picking out a web host, estimate how many users will be accessing your site. Do you have a plan to drive users to your website? If so, how many users will that bring? What is your growth plan? Can the hosting package accommodate it? Each web hosting plan offers a certain amount of bandwidth to you, and it’s really just a measurement that parallels the number of users of your website. Generally, given the same number of users, you’ll use more bandwidth if you have larger page sizes. Secondly, when picking a web hosting provider, decide how much storage you’ll need. The needs are clealry different if you have thousands of big photos versus just a few. You’ll also want to see if your site requires MySQL, Perl, or PHP. Most web hosts have these, and they’re only useful if you have a site with dynamic functionality like a database or dynamic pages.

Finally, you’ll want to see how many domains you can add to your account. If you plan on creating lots of websites, you’ll want to ask your hosting service how many you can add to your plan. Some companies have a window of say, 10 domains. That should get you started on your road to understanding web hosting. If you have any further questions, look up the terms or visit a web hosting message board and post in the Newbies or Beginners section.

Building an opt-in list is “the” major goal of the internet marketer. Obviously, the ultimate purpose is to monetise the list (i.e. derive income from the list through sales, subscriptions, etc.) But cash generally comes after the list building.

There are many methods that can be used to drive traffic to your website, but when it comes down to it, they all fit in one of the THREE list building aims to discuss the best techniques in each of these three areas, so that newbies and relatively unsuccessful internet marketers can harness these techniques to good effect in order to gravitate traffic to your website in droves.

Let’s begin with “buying your list”. The main technique in this category is Google AdWords. Must people have heard of Google AdWords, however it is probably safe to say that AdWords are shrouded in mystery, with well worn stories of amateurs losing fortunes because they chose the “wrong” keywords, which ultimately turned out to be more expensive than the value of the leads.

Well, there are a number of useful tools on the market that can be utilised to aid the Adword marketer to protect themselves against such economic loss. One such tool is Emil Paz’s PPC Bully 2.0. PPC Bully 2.0′s usefulness comes in the way it “spies” on other successful marketer’s websites by analysing the keywords being used by the top ranking websites.

Jonny Andrews’ Money Syphon System works in a similar manner, although rather than analyse competitor’s keywords, it tries to analyse keywords entered into its search box (based on those used on source pages of competitor sites).

Banner ads can also be bought relatively cheaply on niche forums. Because the forums are well targeted, in other words they come with large numbers of like minded individuals, they can be excellent sources of paid for leads.

So, let’s now take a look at “borrowing your list”. Affiliate marketing is probably the most well known technique in the borrowed list category. Affiliate marketing works in one of two ways. Firstly, marketers that have a list, but no product of their own, can utilise affiliate marketing by recommending someone else’s product to their own list. Or in cases where they don’t have an opt-in list, but they have a product for sale, they can create an affiliate programme, which is essentially a means by which other marketers recommend your product to their lists.

It is not uncommon for affiliate marketers to earn commissions of 75% per sale, and even greater than 100% in instances where the vendor (product owner) is willing to make a loss on their front-end product in order to gain opt-in subscribers to their list, so they can market to them over the coming weeks and months.

There are several website dedicated to affiliate marketing and perhaps the most well-known of these is Clickbank. Clickbank exclusively promotes digital products such as ebooks, software, video tutorials, etc. as these products can be downloaded instantly, and do not require a fulfilment system. In fact much of the internet marketing (IM) niche is focused on digital products, however, sites like Commmission Junction do operate an affiliate programme for physical products, that is things that require to be delivered by post or courier. Obviously, as these products have costs related to manufacture and/or delivery, the commissions paid on these types of products are far smaller than digital download products, which of course can be automated, so the seller doesn’t even need to get involved in delivery.

Right, let’s now turn to “building your list”. The common techniques for building a list includes activities such as blogging, article writing, and relationship building (similar to that of the offline marketer). This strategy is often phrased as “web 2.0″. Web 2.0 describes the use of social networking, bookmarking, and article publication that proliferates the internet today.

Social networking sites have taken internet marketing by storm and most people have heard of sites such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Stumbleupon, and Digg. They all have their own uses, i.e. from mainstream blogging sites such as Blogger to micro blogging sites like Twitter). Micro blogging sites use much less words or characters in each “tweet” (coined by Twitter). This makes for a much more real time experience.

The use of videos on websites has exploded in recent months, because market research indicates that web surfers are much more inclined to view videos than they are to sit and read text. Sites such as Youtube and Google Videos are good examples of this form of marketing.

The main purpose of blogging and article writing (from the IM’s point of view) is to create backlinks from the blog/article to the main website. The more validated backlinks the higher Googer (and similar search engines) ranks the main site.
